Through our Gigabit networks we believe we can build a digital society that helps improve people’s lives.
We are committed to investing in our network infrastructure and coverage to deliver a high-quality service that allows individuals and businesses to connect confidently anywhere and at any time.
The public and private sectors are rapidly moving towards digital-led services in a Gigabit Society. This includes remote healthcare and education, smart energy grids, digital retail experiences and smarter cities.
Getting online opens the door to opportunities that can transform people’s lives. It can mean better access to training, jobs or healthcare. Even the ability to keep in touch with friends and family can extend a valuable lifeline. We’re helping to build an inclusive digital society to make sure no one is left behind, regardless of age, income or disability.
Our 2025 goal
To connect over 350 million people to our Gigabit networks
Last year, a report published by the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (‘DCMS’) set out a number of benefits that high-speed internet (such as 5G) can have on the economy.
- Increased consumer value by enabling innovative apps and services, particularly those which feature Augmented Reality (‘AR’) and Virtual Reality (‘VR’)
- Productivity gains, such as faster download times and enabling the ability to work in-transit
- Reduced carbon emissions – through supporting the large-scale deployment of IoT technologies across sectors (see here for more information)
By connecting over 350 million people to our Gigabit networks by 2025 we want to support our customers, both individuals and businesses, to realise these benefits.
How we are building a Gigabit network
We are expanding our fast, low latency and reliable 4G/5G mobile networks and over 30MB/s fixed networks with widespread connectivity for citizens, communities and businesses. With the ambition of creating smarter cities and thriving economies.
Fixed Gigabit Networks
We are futureproofing our fixed line infrastructure by upgrading our cable network to the latest DOCSIS 3.1 technology and deploying fibre deep into the network. Our Fixed Gigabit Networks will deliver a significant improvement in the maximum user speeds and network capacity and speeds of 30MB/s will directly improve the lives of millions of people. We are now Europe’s largest fixed next-generation network provider (NGN) by footprint, with 19.7 million broadband customers and 107 million marketable households in Europe.
As the table below highlights, our Fixed Gigabit Networks will deliver a faster and more reliable service than ever before.
|Digital Item||Typical size||ADSL copper network||Gigabit Network FTTH|
|Average Kindle eBook||2.6 megabytes||1 second||30 milliseconds|
|CT scan||2 gigabytes||14 minutes||40 seconds|
|Virtual Reality Game||5 gigabytes||34 minutes||1.7 minutes|
|Blu-ray movie||25 gigabytes||2.8 hours||8 minutes|
|4K movie||100 gigabytes||11 hours||33 minutes|
4G/ 5G Mobile Gigabit Networks
Today 92% of our European data sessions are at high definition standard and we have the lowest call drop rate in Europe at 0.34%. In the future we will continue to evolve our 4G networks towards delivering gigabit data speeds, increased network capacity, improved response (latency) times and new service capabilities.
Our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Our approach is contributing to SDGs:
Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
(our primary focus)
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
